Matte top coat

A matte top coat is a clear top coat that contains silica or other matting agents, which scatter light so that any polish underneath dries to a flat, velvety surface with no gloss.

A matte top coat is a clear coat with silica or similar matting agents suspended in it. On a glossy surface, light reflects in one direction and the eye sees shine. The matting particles roughen the surface at a microscopic level, so light scatters in all directions and the finish looks flat and soft.

Any polish can be matted. A crème becomes a chalky solid. A shimmer becomes a frosted texture. A magnetic cat eye or velvet keeps its light band but loses the wet look. Because the effect comes from the top coat, the same colour can be worn glossy one week and matte the next.

Matte finishes show wear faster than gloss. Oil from the skin, hand cream and fingerprints leave shiny marks on the surface, and scuffs show. A matte top coat also shortens wear time compared with a glossy one, so reapplying every 2 to 3 days keeps the finish even¹. Christian Louboutin sells a matte version of its Rouge Louboutin shade at $50².

A matte top coat goes over fully dry colour, in one thin coat. Applying it over a glossy top coat gives a smoother matte than applying it straight over colour. Matte and glossy can be combined on one nail for a two-texture design.
