How to use lip liner, from the first stroke to the last blot

Lip liner is the pencil that decides where the lips end. It draws the edge, corrects a lopsided bow, keeps gloss and lipstick inside the line and gives sheer colour a base to grip. For two decades it was the step most people skipped. Since 2023 it has become the fastest-growing part of the lip category, pulled along by the lip combo videos that pair a liner with a stain and a gloss.

The technique has changed with the products. The hard, dark outline of the 1990s has given way to a line that is blended inward and matched to the natural lip. Creamy, waxy formulas now last six to twelve hours and can be worn on their own. The method that follows works with any liner, from a drugstore pencil to a luxury one.

What does lip liner do?

Lip liner is a pencil of wax, oil and pigment that draws a defined edge around the lips before lipstick or gloss goes on. It does three jobs. It shapes, by tracing, correcting or slightly extending the natural outline. It protects, by laying a waxy barrier over the fine vertical lines around the mouth so colour cannot creep into them. And it anchors, by giving slippery formulas a matte surface to cling to.

The category has grown fast. Circana data reported by Glossy put lip liner sales up 28% year to date in October 2025, in a year when prestige make-up as a whole rose 1%. US lip liner sales grew 60% between 2022 and 2024, from US$138.9 million to US$223 million, according to Glossy Pop. The driver is the lip combo, the layered liner, stain and gloss look that TikTok turned into a format.

Which lip liner format should you choose?

Five formats share the name lip liner. The wooden sharpenable pencil is the prestige standard because it gives the finest point and the most wax for long wear. The retractable pencil is the convenient one. The other three (dual-ended, crayon and peel-off stain) each suit one job.

Price follows format. The wooden prestige pencil costs about US$25 to US$32 (Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat is €28.50 in the EU, NARS Powermatte US$32), while retractable pencils from Rare Beauty and Kylie Cosmetics cost US$18 to US$19, according to the brand pages listed in the sources. How do you match lip liner to lipstick or gloss?

There are three matching rules and each gives a different result. A liner that matches your natural lip colour gives an invisible edge and works under any gloss. A liner one to two shades deeper than the lipstick or gloss gives definition and a fuller look. A contrasting liner, such as a brown under a red gloss, is a deliberate look with its own name, cherry cola.

Undertone decides the family. Charlotte Tilbury's shade guide sends fair and medium skin towards rosy pinks, creamy beiges and taupes, and tan to deep skin towards caramels, coffee browns and cocoa. How do you apply lip liner step by step?

A clean line takes about two minutes and depends more on preparation than on a steady hand. Short strokes are easier to control than one long sweep, and a sharpened point is easier to place than a blunt one.

You will need

• A lip liner, freshly sharpened
• A lip balm and a tissue
• A small lip brush or a clean fingertip
• A little concealer and a flat brush (optional, for cleaning the edge)

The steps

1. Prepare the lips. Rub off dry flakes with a damp flannel, apply balm, wait two minutes, then blot the balm off with a tissue. Liner slides on balm residue and fades within the hour.
2. Mark the cupid's bow. Draw a short vertical stroke on each peak of the bow. These two marks fix the height of the top lip.
3. Line the top lip. From each peak, trace out to the corner in short, feathered strokes with the pencil resting on the natural edge.
4. Line the bottom lip. Start at the centre and work outward. Stop a few millimetres before each corner; the corners are where a line looks drawn on.
5. Fill inward. Shade the outer third of each lip with the side of the pencil so the edge and the colour blend into each other.
6. Blend the inner border of the fill with a brush or fingertip until there is no hard line.
7. Blot once with a tissue, then apply lipstick or gloss over the liner.
8. Clean the outer edge, if needed, with a touch of concealer on a flat brush.

How do you overline lips without it showing?

Overlining is drawing the liner slightly outside the natural lip edge to make the lips look larger. It works when it is small and central. Dutch retailer Douglas advises drawing 1 to 2 mm above and below the natural edge and blending inward. Make-up artists quoted by Marie Claire concentrate the exaggeration on the cupid's bow, using vertical strokes on each peak, and overline only the centre of the bottom lip, because extending the line to the corners creates a downturned mouth.

Three habits give the game away: a line that is darker than the lipstick, a line that reaches the corners, and a hard border between the liner and the bare lip. How do you wear lip liner with gloss?

Gloss on its own lasts two to three hours and moves with every sip. Gloss over a filled-in liner lasts longer because the waxy pigment stays on the lip after the shine has gone, and the liner's matte surface slows the gloss from sliding. Can you wear lip liner as your only lip colour?

Yes. A creamy liner filled in across the whole lip, pressed with a tissue and topped with balm gives a soft matte lip that lasts longer than most lipsticks. Makeup by Mario and Kylie Cosmetics both market their pencils as products to wear alone, and Kylie's liner claims smudge-proof wear of up to 24 hours on its product page. How do you make lip liner last and stop it feathering?

Feathering is colour bleeding from the lip edge into the fine vertical lines around the mouth. A waxy liner is the first defence because it fills those lines before colour reaches them. Which lip liner looks are current for 2026 and 2027?

The direction is cooler and softer. Who What Wear's autumn and winter 2026 report describes cool-toned 1990s liner at Boss, Gucci, Ottolinger and Chanel, in deep browns, taupes, mauves and cool beiges, buffed into the lip and not drawn as an outline. Blurred lips, the stained-in look with no visible edge, is the year's headline lip trend, with lip liner searches up 52% according to Who What Wear UK.
