How to match nude nail polish to your skin tone

By India Anaïs EditorialPublished Updated 6 min read
In short

The right nude nail polish is one or two shades lighter or darker than your skin, with the same undertone. Cool undertones suit rosy and mauve nudes, warm undertones suit peach, honey and caramel, neutral undertones suit a balanced pink-beige. A nude that matches the skin exactly makes fingers and nails merge into one, the mannequin-hand effect.

A nude nail polish is a shade close to the colour of skin or of the bare nail, worn to make the hand look finished without a visible colour. It is the most worn category of polish and the hardest to buy, because a nude that flatters one hand turns another grey, orange or lifeless.

Two things decide whether a nude works: the depth of the skin (fair to deep) and its undertone (cool, warm or neutral). Get the undertone right and most of the depth question takes care of itself. Get it wrong and no amount of gloss will fix it.

How do you find your undertone?

Undertone is the colour beneath the surface of the skin, and it stays the same whether the skin is pale in winter or tanned in summer. Two tests give the answer in a minute. In natural light, look at the veins on the inside of the wrist: blue or purple veins point to a cool undertone, greenish veins to a warm one, and a mix to neutral1. Then check jewellery: silver flatters cool undertones, gold flatters warm ones, and if both look equally good the undertone is neutral.

A third clue is how the skin reacts to sun. Skin that burns easily is more often cool, skin that tans easily is more often warm1. Manucurist uses the same vein and jewellery tests for deep skin, where the undertone decides the nude more than the depth does2.

Olive skin is a special case. It has a green-gold cast that reads as neutral to warm in the vein test but can turn a peach nude orange and a pink nude grey. Olive hands usually do best with a beige that has a little pink and a little yellow in it, or with a sheer that lets the nail show through.

Which nude suits which undertone?

The rule is one line long: match the undertone, then move one or two steps lighter or darker than the skin. Cool undertones suit rosy or mauve-based nudes. Warm undertones suit peach, honey and caramel nudes. Neutral undertones suit a balanced pink-beige that leans neither way1.

The mismatches are as predictable as the matches. Manucurist advises cool-undertoned deep skin to avoid ochre, beige nudes and warm greys, and warm-undertoned deep skin to avoid peach, pale mauve and light grey2. A cool nude on a warm hand looks like chalk. A warm nude on a cool hand looks like a plaster.

Which nude suits which skin depth?

On deep skin the two best-known nudes are at opposite ends: a light cream, which L'Oréal notes does not wash out deep skin but emphasises its richness, and a mocha or chocolate brown that reads as a deepened version of the hand3. Pantone's 2025 colour of the year, Mocha Mousse, made warm brown nudes the most worn nude of that year across all skin depths4.

What is the mannequin-hand mistake?

The mannequin-hand mistake is a nude that matches the skin so exactly that the nail disappears and the fingers look like one moulded piece of plastic. It happens most with opaque crème nudes chosen by holding the bottle against the back of the hand, because the bottle colour and the dried film on the nail are never the same.

Three fixes work. Move one or two steps away from the skin: lighter on fair to medium hands, darker or lighter on tan and deep hands. Add a cast the skin does not have, such as a touch of pink on a beige hand or a touch of mauve on a warm one. Or choose a sheer nude, which shows the natural white of the free edge and the pink of the nail bed, so the nail keeps its own shape.

Neutral undertones are the most at risk, because almost any colour suits them and a nude too close to the skin does not stand out. A neutral hand needs a nude with a visible cast, not a colour match.

Sheer or opaque nude?

A sheer nude is a translucent tint that builds in coats and shows the nail underneath. An opaque nude is a crème that covers the nail in two coats. Sheers are the safer buy: they suit every undertone within a family because the natural nail contributes its own colour, and they hide chips and brush strokes. Barely-there sheers and milky whites were in the 2025 trend lists for exactly that reason5.

Opaque nudes give a cleaner, more polished look and cover discolouration and ridges. They also show every mismatch. Chanel's 111 Ballerina, a sheer pink, and Dior's Nude Look are the two most cited luxury nudes because each is designed to flatter a wide range of hands with a sheer film and a pink cast6,7.

Milk Veil, the sheer milky white from India Anaïs, is an example of the sheer route: one coat for a bare look, two for a soft milk. The first edition is sold out, and the next edition is planned for spring 2027.

How to test a nude before you buy it

You will need: a bare, clean nail, natural daylight, a warm indoor lamp, and a tester or a friend's bottle. Test on the nail, never on paper or on the back of the hand.

  1. Paint one full nail with two coats and let it dry. One coat of a nude looks different from two.
  2. Look at it in daylight, near a window, with the hand held at arm's length. That is how other people see the hand.
  3. Look at it again under a warm indoor lamp. A nude that goes orange under a lamp is too warm; one that goes grey is too cool.
  4. Compare the nail to the inside of the forearm, where the skin is least tanned. The nude should be a clear step lighter or darker than that skin.
  5. Check for the mannequin effect: if the nail edge is hard to see at arm's length, the shade is too close to the skin.
  6. Wear it for a day. A nude that still pleases at the end of a day of typing and washing is the one to buy.

Apply a base coat first, even under a sheer. It fills fine ridges and stops the nail's own yellow tones from showing through a translucent film. Ridge-filling bases contain silica or talc for this purpose8.

Key takeaways
  • Match the undertone first: rosy and mauve nudes for cool, peach and caramel for warm, pink-beige for neutral.
  • Choose a nude one or two steps lighter or darker than the skin, never an exact match.
  • The vein test and the jewellery test find your undertone in a minute.
  • Sheer nudes suit more hands than opaque ones because the nail adds its own colour.
  • Test two coats on a nail in daylight and under a lamp before buying.

Questions people ask

What nude nail polish suits fair skin?

A sheer pink or pink-beige one step darker than the skin. Cool fair skin suits a ballet pink; warm fair skin suits a sheer peach-pink. Opaque beige on fair skin reads as a bandage.

What nude nail polish suits dark skin?

Either a light cream, which contrasts with deep skin without washing it out, or a caramel, mocha or cocoa brown one step away from the skin. Cool undertones should avoid ochre and beige nudes; warm undertones should avoid peach and pale mauve.

What nude nail polish suits olive skin?

A beige with a little pink and a little yellow, a warm sand, or a sheer that lets the nail show. Peach tends to go orange on olive skin and cool grey-pinks go dull.

How do I know if I have cool or warm undertones?

Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist in daylight. Blue or purple veins suggest cool, greenish veins suggest warm, a mix suggests neutral. Silver jewellery flattering you more than gold points to cool; gold points to warm.

Why does nude nail polish look bad on me?

Usually because the undertone is wrong or the shade matches the skin too closely. A cool nude on a warm hand looks chalky, a warm nude on a cool hand looks orange, and an exact match makes the nails vanish. Move one step lighter or darker and switch undertone.

Is a sheer or an opaque nude better?

Sheer nudes suit more people because the natural nail adds colour and the film hides chips. Opaque nudes look more polished and cover discolouration, but they show a mismatch at once.
