Milky nails
Milky nails are a sheer nail look that uses a translucent white or off-white polish, so the nail looks softly clouded, like diluted milk, and the natural nail shows through.
Also known as: milky white nails, milk nails, milky nail polish, sheer white nails
Milky nails use a white polish with a jelly-like, translucent base. One coat gives a soft haze. Two coats give a cloudy white that still shows the pink of the nail bed beneath. The look reads as clean and quiet, and it flatters short nails.
The colour has been the neutral of the mid 2020s. Pantone named Cloud Dancer, a soft white, its colour of the year for 2026, and trade titles listed milky whites as the year's main neutral1. Manicurist Queenie Nguyen predicted a milky-white French tip for 2025 in place of the pure white tip2. Milk pink, the same idea in a pale rose, led the 2026 lists in the Netherlands3.
Milky polish is the base of several related looks. Glazed donut nails add a pearl chrome powder. Milk bath nails add pressed flowers or foil under a clear top coat. Milky French uses the sheer white on the tip only. Aura nails often use a milky base under a colour cloud.
Because the film is sheer, the nail underneath decides the result. A base coat prevents stains from showing through, and a light buff evens ridges. Milky polish also needs careful, thin coats. A thick coat looks patchy and takes longer to dry.
