How to remove press-on nails gently

Soak your fingertips in warm water with a little soap and oil for 10 to 15 minutes, until the glue softens. Slide a cuticle stick under the side of each nail and lift it gently, soaking longer if it resists. Pulling a glued nail off dry takes layers of your own nail with it. Afterwards, oil your nails daily and give them a few days before the next set.
Why removal matters most
Most harm from artificial nails happens when they come off. Pulling a glued nail off dry takes the top layers of the nail plate with it, in the same way that peeling gel does. Dermatologists point to removal as one of the risks of artificial nails and advise keeping them for special occasions, so the natural nail can recover1.
How to remove glued press-on nails, step by step
- Fill a bowl with warm water, a few drops of soap and a little oil, such as Gold Drop or olive oil.
- Soak your fingertips for 10 to 15 minutes, until the glue softens.
- Slide the cuticle stick under the side of a nail and lift it gently. If it resists, soak for another five minutes.
- Work round the nail from the side towards the tip. Take your time with the thumbs.
- Buff any glue that stays on the nail very lightly, or let it soften in the next soak.
- Wash and dry your hands, then oil the nails and cuticles.
How to remove press-ons worn with tabs
Tabs let go more easily. Lift the nail from the side with the stick, peel the tab off the press-on and clean the inside with an alcohol pad. The nail goes back into the box for the next time.
How to care for your nails afterwards
Oil the cuticles and nails every day for a few days before the next set. Cuticle oil keeps the plate flexible, so it bends before it cracks2. A short break between sets gives your nails time to grow out any thin or rough spots.
When should you see a doctor?
See a GP or dermatologist if the nail lifts from the nail bed, if the skin around the nail becomes red, itchy or swollen, or if you feel tingling. Nail glues and acrylates can cause allergic reactions, and ethyl cyanoacrylate glue has been linked to the nail lifting from its bed3. In 2018 the British Association of Dermatologists warned about a rise in allergies to acrylates in nail products4.
- Most damage from artificial nails happens at removal.
- Soak for 10 to 15 minutes in warm, soapy water with oil, then lift from the side.
- Tabs let go easily and let you wear the set again.
- See a doctor for lifting nails, red or itchy skin, or tingling.
Questions people ask
Can I use acetone to remove press-on nails?
Acetone dissolves nail glue, but it also dries the nail and the skin and can dull the press-ons. Warm, soapy water with oil is gentler and keeps the nails reusable.
How long should I wait between sets?
A few days with daily cuticle oil is enough for most nails. If your nails feel thin or rough, give them longer.
Can I reuse press-on nails after removal?
Yes, if they came off clean. Remove leftover glue from the inside, store them in the box and wear them with tabs or fresh glue.
