Press-on nails, gel or acrylic: which is right for you?
Press-on nails are ready-made nails you apply at home with glue or tabs, for a day up to about three weeks. Gel polish hardens under a lamp and lasts about two weeks; acrylic nails are built in a salon and filled every two to three weeks. Press-ons go on at home in minutes and come off in warm, soapy water, which makes gentle removal the main care point.
What is the difference?
Press-on nails are ready-made nails that you glue or tape onto your own nail. Gel polish is a liquid that hardens on the nail under a lamp. Acrylic nails are built on the nail from a liquid monomer and a powder. All three can lengthen short nails and make fingers look long and slender, and all three can be hard on your nails1.

Artificial nails usually need touch-ups every two to three weeks, and removal with acetone or filing is where damage adds up2. Cleveland Clinic dermatologists also describe gel manicures as hard on the nail plate3.
What do the EU rules say about gel?
Since 1 September 2025 the photoinitiator TPO is banned in cosmetic products in the EU, including gel nail products, after it was classified as toxic for reproduction4. HEMA, a common gel ingredient, is restricted to professional use in nail products because it can cause allergy5. Press-on nails work with nail glue instead, a cyanoacrylate, which can also cause reactions in some people6.
Which one should you choose?
Choose press-on nails for flexible wear at home: a new shape or design for a week, or for one evening. Choose gel for your own length with a long-lasting colour, and acrylic when you want to build length on the nail in a salon. Whatever you choose, dermatologists advise giving your nails breaks between sets2. Press-ons have also reached the runway: at New York Fashion Week for spring 2027, KISS press-ons were worn at Christian Cowan7.
