How to stop eyeliner smudging under the eyes

Eyeliner smudges under the eyes when oil, tears or the fold of a hooded lid move a formula that has not set. Stop it by priming and powdering the lid, setting pencil with a matching shadow, choosing a gel or liquid that sets to a film, keeping any lower line to the outer third, and staying off the lower waterline, where tears wash pigment down all day.
A smudge is pigment that has moved. Three things move it: oil from the skin, water from the eye, and skin touching skin when a hooded lid folds over the line or the lower lid blinks against it. Most fixes work on one of those three, so the first step is to know which one is at work on your face.
Under the eye is where all three meet. The lower lid is thin, it blinks all day, the lashes there catch mascara, and the waterline is wet. A liner drawn on the lower rim has the shortest life of any line on the face.
Why does eyeliner smudge under the eyes?
Oily lids are the first cause. Sebum dissolves the waxes and oils in a pencil and loosens the film of a liquid, and the loosened pigment slides into the fine lines under the eye. Skin-care applied too close to the lashes and sunscreen that has not absorbed do the same thing.
Transfer is the second cause. On a hooded or mature lid, the skin above the crease rests on the lash line when the eye is open, and an unset liner prints onto it. Make-up artists compiled by AOL name transfer as the main liner complaint for hooded eyes and advise waterproof formulas for that shape. On the lower lid, mascara on the lower lashes is the usual printer.
Water is the third cause. Tears, a wet waterline and a watery eye in cold wind all carry pigment down. A kohl pencil, which is rich in castor oil and waxes and stays soft on purpose, migrates the most; it is made to smudge. A liquid liner dries to a film of acrylate polymers that water does not lift, which is why waterproof liquids stay and kohls do not.
Which eyeliner formula smudges least?
Liquids and gels set into a film and stay where they are drawn. Pencils and kohls stay soft and need setting. Powder used as liner is softest and fades first.
| Formula | How it sets | Smudge risk | Typical wear claim | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid, felt or brush tip | Dries to a polymer film in under a minute | Low once dry; can flake if built thick | 8 to 24 hours, often waterproof | Upper lash line, wings |
| Gel pot with brush | Workable for 30 to 60 seconds, then sets | Low | 12 to 24 hours | Upper line, smoky liner that is then set |
| Gel pencil | Volatile silicones flash off and leave a wax and polymer film | Low to medium; set within a minute | 8 to 24 hours on the lid, 8 to 12 on the waterline | Everyday, tightline, lower lash line |
| Kohl or kajal | Stays soft | High | 4 to 8 hours unless waterproof | Smudged looks, set with shadow |
| Powder or shadow | Does not set | High, fades first | Short | Softest lower lash line |
Wear claims come from the brands. Dior Diorshow Stylo claims 24-hour wear from an instrumental test on 20 subjects, and MAC Colour Excess claims 24 or more hours on the lid and 12 hours on the waterline (Dior, MAC). The gap between the lid figure and the waterline figure is the wet-surface penalty.
How do you prepare an oily lid so liner stays?
Liner stays on a dry, matte, slightly gripped surface. L'Oréal Paris's list for all-day liner starts with an eye primer or a thin coat of concealer on the lid, then translucent powder along the lash line to absorb oil1. Both steps give pigment something to bind to and keep sebum away from the line.
Keep cream products away from the lash line. Eye cream, face oil and sunscreen belong on the orbital bone in the morning, with the lash line and the lid left bare. If the lid is very oily, press a tissue or a blotting paper on it before priming, and press the powder on with a small brush so it does not fall into the eye.
Under the eye, a fine dusting of translucent powder before any lower liner or mascara stops pigment from sliding into the fine lines there and makes any transfer easy to brush away.
How do you set a pencil line so it does not move?
You will need
- Eye primer or a small amount of concealer
- Translucent setting powder and a small fluffy brush
- A gel or kohl pencil, sharpened
- An eyeshadow in the same colour as the pencil and a small flat brush
- A liquid or gel liner in the same colour, for the upper line
- A setting spray, optional
- Prime the lid and press translucent powder along the upper and lower lash lines. Let the primer set for a minute before drawing.
- Draw the pencil line in short strokes, pressed into the lash base. Keep a lower line to the outer third of the lower lashes.
- Press matching eyeshadow over the pencil with a flat brush. The powder locks the soft pencil and absorbs the oil that would move it.
- On the upper lid, draw a liquid or gel liner over the set pencil. L'Oréal Paris describes pencil under liquid as the way to sharpen the edge and lock everything in place.
- Wait 30 to 60 seconds with the eye open and relaxed before blinking hard or applying mascara. A gel line sets in that window.
- Mist setting spray from arm's length if you use one, and blot the lid with a tissue mid-afternoon if it turns oily.
The shadow step is the one most people skip, and it is the one that does the most on a pencil. India Anaïs Plum Ink, a gel pencil in deep plum, blends for about 40 seconds and then sets; a matching shadow pressed on top in that window keeps it in place on a hooded lid.
How do you solve the lower-lid transfer problem?
Lower liner smudges for a reason no product removes: the waterline is wet and the lower lashes touch the skin below them. The safest and longest-lasting placement is a line drawn under the lower lashes, on the skin, on the outer third only. Optometrist Dr Alexa Hecht recommends lining under the lashes for the same smoky effect while leaving the waterline free, because product on the rim blocks the meibomian glands that make the oily part of the tear film5.
If you do line the lower waterline, use a waterproof gel pencil made for it, sharpen it first, and accept the shorter wear that the brands themselves quote. MAC's 12 hours on the waterline against 24 or more on the lid is the ratio to expect4. Skip the inner third of the rim, where the tear duct keeps the surface wettest.
Mascara on the lower lashes is the other printer. A tubing or waterproof mascara, applied lightly and combed through, transfers less than a wet volumising one. On a day when smudging matters, leave the lower lashes bare.
Is waterproof eyeliner the answer, and what does it cost?
Waterproof eyeliner is a liner whose film resists water, oil and rubbing, and it is the single most valued claim in the category. Mordor Intelligence attributes 1.5 percentage points of the eyeliner market's growth to demand for long-lasting, waterproof formulas, with waterproof and sweat-proof lines growing at 7.97 percent a year6.
The cost is in removal and on the eye surface. A heavier film resists transfer but flakes when built thick and needs an oil or biphase remover held on the lid for around 20 seconds to dissolve7. Dr Hecht also warns that waterproof mascaras and liners can be damaging to the eye's surface, especially on the waterline5. Use waterproof on the upper lash line, where it earns its keep, and remove it fully every night.
A water-resistant liquid is the middle option for a normal lid. It survives a watery eye and a warm room, and it removes with a normal cleanser. India Anaïs Midnight Muse, a brush-tip liquid in blue-black, is water-resistant and made to stay put on hooded lids; the first edition is sold out, and the next edition is planned for spring 2027.
How do you fix a smudge without starting again?
Wait until the smudge is dry, then sweep it away with a clean fluffy brush. Wet pigment spreads; dry pigment lifts. If it has settled into the skin, dip a cotton bud in micellar water, squeeze it almost dry, and draw it along the smudge in one stroke from the inner corner outward.
Then re-cover. Press a little concealer over the cleaned area with a flat brush, set it with powder, and redraw only the outer third of the lower line if you want one at all.
If liner smudges every day despite prep, change the formula before adding more steps. Swapping a kohl for a gel pencil, or a pencil for a liquid on the upper lid, removes the cause.
- Eyeliner smudges because oil, tears or a folding lid move a formula that has not set.
- Prime and powder the lid, keep creams off the lash line, and set pencil with a matching shadow.
- Liquids and gels set to a film and smudge least; kohl stays soft and migrates most.
- Keep a lower line under the lashes on the outer third, and stay off the wet waterline for the longest wear.
- Waterproof belongs on the upper lash line; remove it fully every night with an oil-based remover.
Questions people ask
Why does my eyeliner smudge under my eyes?
Oil from the skin, tears from the waterline and contact between the lower lashes and the skin all move soft pigment down. A kohl or unset pencil on the lower rim smudges fastest. Powder under the eye, a set gel pencil on the outer third only, and no liner on the waterline stop most of it.
Does eye primer stop eyeliner smudging?
Yes, on the lid. Primer or a thin coat of concealer gives pigment a dry, gripped surface and keeps oil away from the line. Press translucent powder over it along the lash line for the full effect.
How do you set pencil eyeliner so it lasts all day?
Press an eyeshadow in the same colour over the pencil line with a flat brush, then draw a liquid or gel liner over it on the upper lid. The shadow absorbs oil and the liquid film locks the edge.
Is waterproof eyeliner bad for your eyes?
On the lid it is safe for most people, though it needs an oil-based remover. On the waterline, optometrists advise against it because it blocks the oil glands along the lid margin and is hard to remove fully. Keep waterproof on the upper lash line and take it off every night.
What eyeliner does not smudge on hooded eyes?
A waterproof or water-resistant liquid on the upper lash line, drawn thin and with the eye open. If you prefer a pencil, choose a gel pencil that sets, then press matching shadow over it before the fold touches it.
