Eyeliner is the smallest decision in a make-up bag and the one with the largest effect. A line one millimetre thick changes how open, how long and how awake the eye looks. The same line drawn one millimetre too thick, or on the wrong part of the lid, can close the eye down.
The facts on formats, techniques, eye shapes, colour, wear, safety and removal come from make-up artists, brand wear tests and eye-care professionals. Each subject also has a longer page of its own, linked from the relevant section.
What is eyeliner and what does it do?
Eyeliner is a pigmented cosmetic that is drawn along the edge of the eyelid to define the shape of the eye. It thickens the look of the lash base, lengthens or lifts the outer corner, and gives the eye a frame that mascara alone does not.
Black liners get their opacity from carbon black, listed on the ingredient list as CI 77266. Brown and coloured liners use iron oxides, ultramarines and chromium oxide greens, with mica for shimmer. What separates one format from another is the base that binds the pigment: water and film-forming polymers in a liquid, volatile silicones and waxes in a gel or pencil, and soft oils and waxes in a kohl.
The global eyeliner market was valued at USD 8.76 billion in 2026, and liquid formats took 43.59 percent of sales in 2025, according to Mordor Intelligence. Gel and cream formats are the fastest-growing segment at 7.08 percent a year. Both numbers reflect what people ask of a liner today: a line that is precise, and a line that stays.
Which type of eyeliner should you choose?
Each format is a trade between precision and softness. Liquids draw the sharpest line and are the hardest to soften. Pencils and kohls draw the softest line and are the easiest to smudge, on purpose or by accident. Gel pots and gel pencils fall between the two. A full comparison is in pencil vs gel vs liquid vs kohl eyeliner.
| Format | Precision | Typical wear claim | Smudge risk | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid, felt tip | High, consistent line | 8 to 24 hours, often waterproof | Low once dry | Wings, graphic lines, beginners who want a pen |
| Liquid, brush tip | Highest, hair-thin lines | 8 to 24 hours | Low once dry | Cat eye, siren flick, detail |
| Gel pot with brush | High, buildable | 12 to 24 hours | Low after it sets, workable for 30 to 60 seconds | Smoky liner, tightlining, artistry |
| Gel or kohl pencil | Medium, soft edge | 8 to 24 hours on the lid, 8 to 12 hours on the waterline | Medium, creamy formulas transfer on hooded lids | Everyday definition, older eyes, smudged looks |
| Traditional kajal or kohl stick | Low | 4 to 8 hours unless waterproof | High | Waterline rims, smoky eyes |
| Powder shadow as liner | Low, diffused | Short | Low, it fades in place | Older eyes, no-liner looks |
The wear claims come from brand tests, not independent ones. Dior Diorshow Stylo claims 24-hour wear from an instrumental test on 20 subjects, and MAC Colour Excess claims 24 hours on the lid and 12 hours on the waterline, according to the Dior and MAC product pages. Read them as an upper limit on a dry lid.
How do you apply eyeliner for the first time?
A first line should be thin, close to the lashes, and drawn with the eye open and relaxed. Charlotte Tilbury's artists advise against stretching the lid, because a line drawn on stretched skin changes shape when the skin relaxes (Charlotte Tilbury). Finish one eye before starting the other.
You will need
- A pencil or gel pencil in brown or black
- A mirror at eye level, in daylight
- A cotton bud and a little micellar water for corrections
- A small brush and a matching powder shadow to set the line
The basic line in five steps
- Rest your elbow on a table so the hand is steady. Look straight ahead into the mirror and tilt the chin up a little, so the lash line is visible with the eye open.
- Start at the outer third of the upper lash line. Draw short strokes, two to three millimetres each, pressed into the base of the lashes.
- Work inward toward the centre of the lid. Stop before the inner corner for a natural look, or continue for a stronger one.
- Check with both eyes open. Thicken the outer third only if the line disappears when the eye is open.
- Press a matching powder shadow over the line with a small brush to set it. Correct any wobble with a cotton bud dipped in micellar water.
The step-by-step for a full wing, including the angle and the dot-and-connect method, is in how to do winged eyeliner. The technique for lining the upper waterline so lashes look denser with no visible line is in tightlining.
Which eyeliner suits your eye shape?
Eye shape decides where the line goes and how thick it can be. The rules come from celebrity make-up artists Tim Quinn, Risa Rodriguez, Glenn Brownell and Nydia Figueroa, compiled by AOL, and from Charlotte Tilbury's guidance on hooded eyes.
| Eye shape | What to do | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Almond | Anything: wings, smudged liner top and bottom | Little to avoid |
| Round | A thin outward line that lengthens; lower liner on the outer third only | Heavy wings that widen the eye further |
| Hooded | Thin lines close to the lashes, drawn with the eye open; batwing or puppy shape; waterproof formulas | Thick lines that vanish under the hood |
| Monolid | A thicker line than feels natural, checked with the eye open; straight or puppy wing | A thin line, which disappears when the eye opens |
| Downturned | A straight line with the outer edge cheated upward; dark colour on the outer half | Lower liner that follows the corner down |
| Upturned | The classic wing, with depth at the outer lid | Very little |
| Close-set | Start the line at the middle of the lid and extend outward; brighten the inner corner | Dark liner at the inner corner |
| Wide-set | Define the inner corner | Long wings that push the eyes further apart |
| Mature | A soft gel pencil in brown or plum, a thin line on the outer third with a small lift | Rimming the whole eye, black on the lower waterline |
Three shapes get their own pages: eyeliner for hooded eyes, eyeliner for monolids and eyeliner for mature eyes.
Which colour of eyeliner should you wear?
Black gives the most contrast and the hardest edge. Brown gives definition with less contrast, which is why it is the daily default in most 2025 and 2026 editorial round-ups. Who What Wear's 2025 list of eyeliner looks put chocolate and burgundy liners under the label alt-black, and Marie Claire's report from the spring 2027 New York shows wrote that black eyeliner is almost too basic to keep a place in the make-up bag this year (Marie Claire). The choice by hair and skin is in brown vs black eyeliner.
Colour follows the colour wheel. The shade opposite an eye colour gives the most contrast: bronze, copper and gold for blue eyes; plum, aubergine and red-brown for green eyes; purple and bronze for hazel; navy and purple for brown eyes; charcoal, silver and navy for grey eyes (Jane Iredale). Placement matters as much as shade, and the rules for purple, gold and blue are in coloured eyeliner.
India Anaïs makes three liners on this logic: Midnight Muse, a blue-black liquid; Plum Ink, a deep plum gel pencil that reads as black at a distance; and Gold Vein, a fine metallic gold for the inner corner. The first edition is sold out, and the next edition is planned for spring 2027.
How do you make eyeliner last all day?
Liner fails for two reasons: oil on the lid dissolves the film, and skin touches skin on hooded or deep-set eyes and transfers the pigment. The fix is to remove the oil first and to choose a formula that sets to a film.
The standard routine, as set out by L'Oréal Paris, is an eye primer or a thin concealer on the lid, translucent powder pressed along the lash line to absorb oil, a waterproof formula, a pencil line under the liquid to lock the edge, powder shadow pressed over a pencil, and a setting spray at the end. Skip cream eye products before liner.
The causes and fixes for transfer under the eye, the most common complaint, are in how to stop eyeliner smudging.
Is eyeliner on the waterline safe?
The waterline is the wet inner rim of the eyelid, between the lashes and the eyeball. Along it are the openings of the meibomian glands, which release the oil that keeps tears from evaporating. Optometrist Dr Alexa Hecht explains that putting product on the waterline blocks those glands, and that repeated blocking thickens the oil and contributes to dry eye, blepharitis and infection (Coveteur). She names waterproof formulas as the most damaging and suggests lining directly under the lashes as the alternative.
Ophthalmologist Dr Rupa Wong goes further and says there is no waterline-safe eyeliner (Dr Rupa Wong). Brands may print ophthalmologist tested or waterline safe on a product, and in the European Union each such claim needs evidence under Regulation (EU) 655/2013 on cosmetic claims, but a tested product still blocks the gland it covers.
Practical rules if you line the rim anyway: sharpen the pencil before every use, never share it, throw it away three months after the first waterline use, apply it seated in front of a mirror and never in a moving vehicle, remove it fully every night, and keep glitter and chunky pearl off the rim. Contact lens wearers put lenses in first and choose formulas that do not flake. The full protocol is in eyeliner with contact lenses and sensitive eyes, and the shelf-life and sharpening rules are in eyeliner hygiene, sharpening and shelf life.
See an optician or a general practitioner (GP) if an eye is red, painful, sensitive to light, or if vision changes. Stop wearing eye make-up and contact lenses until it is checked.
How do you remove eyeliner without damaging lashes?
Waterproof liners are built to resist water, so water does not remove them. Oil does. An oil-based or two-phase remover, a cleansing balm, or micellar water for lighter formulas, is pressed onto the closed lid for about 20 seconds and then wiped outward without tugging (MasterClass). A cotton bud dipped in remover clears the lash base and the waterline.
Rubbing pulls lashes out at the root and irritates the thin skin of the lid. If a product needs scrubbing to come off, the remover is wrong for the formula, not the technique. The remover types and their limits are in how to remove waterproof eyeliner.
What are the eyeliner trends for 2026 and 2027?
The autumn and winter 2026 shows, reported by Who What Wear, ran in two directions at once. Thick inky strokes of black edged toward the hairline at Harris Reed, Toga, Proenza Schouler and Dries Van Noten. Tightlining returned at Tory Burch, Julien Macdonald, Dior, Ashlyn and Christian Cowan. Smudged, slept-in kohl appeared at Givenchy, Gucci and Prada.
The spring 2027 New York shows, held from 11 to 16 September 2026, added colour. Who What Wear reported lilac and gold lids by Pat McGrath at Anna Sui, mauve under-eyes at Sandy Liang and amethyst cat eyes at Christian Cowan, with icy and frosted accents at Kim Shui, Luar and DVF. London, Milan and Paris show through early October 2026, so the full season is still open.
For a reader, the direction is a softer daily line in brown or plum, colour at the inner corner or on the lower lash line, and black kept for the sharp evening wing. The season report is in eyeliner trends 2027: colour is back.
“When you're putting products on your waterline, you're basically blocking those glands”
Dr Alexa Hecht, Optometrist, quoted by Coveteur
- Liquid liners draw the sharpest line, pencils the softest, and gel formats fall between them.
- Draw with the eye open and relaxed, finish one eye first, and keep the line thin on hooded eyes and thicker on monolids.
- Brown is the daily default for 2026, black is for contrast, and plum, gold and navy follow the colour wheel.
- Eye doctors say no eyeliner is safe on the waterline, because it blocks the oil glands along the rim.
- Waterproof liner comes off with oil pressed onto a closed lid for 20 seconds, never with rubbing.
Questions people ask
Which eyeliner is best for beginners, pencil or liquid?
A pencil or gel pencil is the most forgiving first liner. It draws in short strokes, smudges into a soft line if the edge wobbles, and comes off with micellar water. A felt-tip liquid pen is the next step once the hand is steady, because it draws the wing in one stroke.
Is it bad to put eyeliner on your waterline every day?
Optometrists advise against it. The waterline has the openings of the meibomian glands, and product on the rim blocks them. Daily use is linked to dry eye and blepharitis. Line directly under the lashes as an alternative, and see an optician if the eyes feel gritty or look red.
Why does my eyeliner smudge under my eyes?
Oil on the skin softens the liner film, and blinking moves it. On hooded eyes the lid touches the line and prints it. Powder under the eye, a waterproof formula, and a line set with matching shadow stop most transfer.
Is winged eyeliner out of style in 2026?
The wing is still shown, but it has moved. Autumn and winter 2026 runways favoured tightlining, inky graphic strokes and smudged kohl over the thin clean-girl wing, and spring 2027 shows added purple and gold. A sharp black wing now reads as an evening choice.
How long does eyeliner last once opened?
Most eye products show a period-after-opening of 6 to 12 months, shown as an open-jar symbol with a number of months. Eye-care professionals advise replacing any product used on the waterline after three months. Throw a liner away sooner if it smells, dries out or changes texture.
