Amethyst Glaze: the cool-toned glazed lip

The glazed lip is the most recognised gloss look of the decade. It began as glazed donut skin, moved to the nails in 2022 and to the lips with the peptide treatments that followed. Every version so far has been warm: honey, peach, rose, brown. The Amethyst Glaze is the same wet, clear shine with the temperature turned down.

The idea is a lip that looks like a drop of amethyst water. There is colour in it, but only as a cast, the way a clear stone tints the light that passes through it. It is the house look of India Anaïs, and it was designed to be done in three steps with one gloss and one finger.

The Amethyst Glaze is a glazed lip that has a faint cool-violet cast under a clear, high-gloss shine. The pigment load is low, so the lip reads as wet crystal, not as a purple lipstick. The shine is concentrated at the centre of the mouth and thins toward the edges, which is what makes a glazed lip look glazed and not painted.

It differs from a lavender gloss in one way: the violet is a cast, not a colour. On the lip it cools a warm natural lip tone by a degree and gives the shine a blue light, the way a cool-white bulb changes a room. On its own it is a day look. Over a plum liner it becomes an evening one.

Where does the glazed lip come from?

The glazed look has a clear timeline. Hailey Bieber's 2022 Met Gala manicure by Zola Ganzorigt, a milky base with chrome powder over a no-wipe top coat, became the glazed donut nail, as reported by Bustle. In May 2022 Rhode launched with three products, and its 16 dollar Peptide Lip Treatment sold out in under an hour and stayed in near-constant sell-out cycles, according to FemFounded.

Glaze became a naming pattern. Rhode, Laneige and YSL, with its Candy Glaze stick at 39 dollars, all use the word for a clear, cushioned shine. The finish itself follows the gloss cycle described by Glossy: sticky gloss, then oil, then balm and treatment, and now back toward decorative shine as minimalism fatigue sets in. Every version of the glazed lip so far has been warm. The Amethyst Glaze is the cool one.

How do you do the Amethyst Glaze in three steps?

You will need: a hydrating lip balm, a sheer cool-violet gloss with a low pigment load and no pearl, and a clean fingertip. A rose-nude liner is optional for definition.

1. Prepare the lip. Press a thin coat of hydrating balm into the lips and let it absorb for a minute. A glazed lip needs a smooth surface, because shine shows flakes.
2. Press on the violet. Dab the sheer cool-violet gloss onto the centre of the lower lip and press it outward with a fingertip, so the cast is even and thin. The edges should be almost bare.
3. Glaze the centre. Add a second, small dose of the same gloss to the centre of both lips only, and press the lips together once. The shine now peaks at the middle and fades to the corners, which is the glazed shape.

Amethyst Glaze, the house gloss in sheer cool violet, was made for these three steps and is applied with a finger. It is sold out; the next edition is planned for spring 2027. Any sheer lavender gloss with a low pigment load and no pearl gives the same effect.

Why does the cool glazed lip work now?

Cool tones are rising after two years of warm brown. Pinterest Predicts 2026 records opalescent makeup up 115 per cent, icy blue and frosted makeup up 150 per cent and vamp romantic dark lips up 160 per cent. Lavender and purple glosses were trending at Beautylish in 2026. A cool violet cast on a glazed lip is the wearable end of that direction.

Shine itself has not moved. MAC runs a dedicated glass lips trend page, Dutch summer 2026 coverage in Girlscene reports that more shine is better, and the Korean overlip technique finishes with gloss concentrated at the centre, according to Jung Saem Mool. The Amethyst Glaze takes that centre-weighted shine and changes only its colour temperature.

Stylus trend analyst Lisa Payne told Glossy that consumers return to old looks only if the formulas are ten to fifteen times what they were before. The glazed lip of 2026 is a hybrid: oil comfort, gloss shine, a treatment claim. The cool cast is the new part; the formula is the price of entry.

Which nails go with the Amethyst Glaze?

A single wash of sheer amethyst jelly polish. One thin coat of a sheer cool-violet jelly tints the nail the way the gloss tints the lip, and a glass top coat gives the same wet shine. The hand next to the mouth then shows the same colour at the same depth, which is the format that photographs.
