Gold-veined lips: the kintsugi lip

Gold-veined lips are a natural or berry lip with one hairline gold line drawn from the cupid's bow, like a kintsugi repair, sealed under clear gloss. It takes three steps: tinted gloss or balm, a single fine line with a gold liquid liner, and clear gloss on top so the gold shows under glass. Pair it with plum or nude nails and one gold vein on the ring finger.
Fantasy lip art filled the feeds of 2026: crystals, chrome, three-dimensional petals. Almost none of it can be worn to lunch. The gold-veined lip is the version that can. It is one hairline of gold, drawn from the cupid's bow downward, and sealed under clear gloss so it looks like a crack in a ceramic bowl that someone repaired with gold.
That image is kintsugi, the Japanese craft of mending broken pottery with lacquer and gold powder, so the repair is shown, not hidden. The lip borrows the line and the idea. It is the house look of India Anaïs for its gold liquid eyeliner, and it takes about twenty seconds once the gloss is on.
What are gold-veined lips?
Gold-veined lips are a lip look that places one or two hairline gold lines on a natural or berry lip and seals them under clear gloss. The line starts at the cupid's bow and follows the natural crease of the lip downward, so it reads as a vein of gold in stone or a repaired crack in ceramic. The gloss on top puts the gold under glass, which is what separates it from a gold lipstick or a gold-dusted lip.
The gold is drawn with a fine-tip metallic liquid liner. The line is thinner than a millimetre and no longer than the lower lip is tall. Everything else about the lip stays as it was: its colour, its shine, its shape. The vein is a detail, not a colour.
What is kintsugi, and why borrow it?
Kintsugi is a Japanese ceramic repair technique whose name means golden joinery. Broken pottery is mended with lacquer and a metal powder, usually gold or silver, so the cracks become a visible record of the object's history, according to Britannica. The repair is shown, and the object is considered more beautiful for it.
The lip borrows two things from it. The first is the line: a single, irregular seam of gold that follows a natural crease. The second is the idea that a mark can be the point. Creators caption it that way, and a look with a story is a look that gets shared. Lacquer is also the material of nail polish, which is why a nail house was drawn to it.
How do you draw the gold vein in three steps?
You will need: a tinted gloss or balm in a natural or berry shade, a fine-tip gold liquid liner, a clear gloss, and a cotton bud for corrections.
- Set the base. Apply the tinted gloss or balm and blot once with a tissue, so the surface is coloured but not wet. A wet base makes the gold bleed.
- Draw the vein. Starting at the peak of the cupid's bow, draw one hairline down and slightly across the upper lip, following a natural crease, and stop before the edge. Keep the pressure light and the line irregular. One line is the look; two is the maximum.
- Seal under glass. Wait ten seconds for the gold to set, then press clear gloss over the whole lip with a finger or the wand. The gold now shows through the gloss, like a seam under a glaze.
Gold Vein, the house fine-tip gold liquid liner, was made for this line and for one dot at the inner corner of the eye. It is sold out; the next edition is planned for spring 2027. Any fine-tip metallic gold liner that is approved for use on lips gives the same result; check the label, because eyeliner pigments are not all approved for the lip area in the EU.
Why does the gold vein work now?
Lip art is having its year and most of it is not wearable. Yahoo reports three-dimensional, crystal and chrome lip art dominating feeds in 2026. Disco lips, high-shine and reflective with a Studio 54 reference, are a holiday 2025 to 2026 trend at NewBeauty, described as a rejection of slick-bun, barely-there makeup. The gold vein is lip art at the size of a detail.
The direction is from minimal to expressive, on a hydrated, skin-like base. Every 2026 trend source reports fatigue with the clean-girl look and a return of frost, glitter, colour and lip art, according to the lip trend reporting in Who What Wear and NewBeauty. Gold on the lip is the smallest possible version of that return, and it uses a product most people already own, a gold liner.
It also fits the format that spreads. Trends spread fastest as a two-product recipe with a name, as the cherry-cola lip showed with a brown liner and a red gloss, reported by Refinery29. The kintsugi lip is a gold liner and a clear gloss. It photographs in a macro close-up and it has a before and after.
Which nails go with the kintsugi lip?
Nude or plum nails with one gold vein on the ring finger. The vein on the nail is drawn the same way: a fine gold foil lacquer on a striping brush, one irregular line from the cuticle toward the free edge, sealed under a glass top coat. The other nine nails stay plain. Isolated chromes, meaning chrome only on the tip or the cuticle line, were a 2025 trend in Marie Claire, and the single gold vein is the same idea drawn as a line.
Gilded Hour, the house gold foil, was described at launch as a full gold nail or one gold vein over Violet Spell, the deep amethyst crème. Both are sold out; the next edition is planned for spring 2027. On the eye, one dot of the same gold liner at the inner corner is enough, so the gold appears three times, small, and never as a block.
Where can the vein go, and what does each placement do?
| Placement | Line | Effect | Best with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cupid's bow, downward | One hairline from the peak into the upper lip | The kintsugi seam; the reference look | Natural or berry gloss |
| Lower lip centre | One short vertical line from the centre crease | Catches light when the mouth is open; reads as a highlight | Clear or nude gloss |
| Outer corner | One short line following the edge inward | A quieter, more asymmetric version | Plum or deep berry |
One placement at a time. Two veins on the same lip read as a pattern, and the look depends on the gold being a single mark.

- The nail pairing is nude or plum with one gold vein on the ring finger, sealed under a glass top coat.
Questions people ask
What is gold lip art?
Gold lip art is any lip look that uses gold pigment as decoration: gold-dusted lips, gold foil, or a drawn gold line. The gold-veined lip is the wearable version, one hairline of gold under clear gloss.
Can you use eyeliner on your lips?
Only if the product is approved for use on lips. In the EU, colourants are approved for specific areas, and some eye products are not approved for the lip area. Check the label or use a gold liner sold for both eyes and lips.
How long does the gold vein last?
As long as the gloss over it. Sealed under clear gloss and away from food, it stays for a few hours. Reapply the gloss without touching the line, and redraw the line after eating.
