Moonstone lips: the modern frost

Frost is back, and it is not the frost you remember. The silver-white lipstick of 2002 was opaque, dry and worn as a colour. The frost of 2026 is a sheen: a milky, blue-white light over a lip that still looks like a lip. Cosmopolitan and Who What Wear confirmed it for the winter of 2025 to 2026, and the Dutch summer 2026 reports followed with a subtle mother-of-pearl shine.

Moonstone is the reference. The gem is prized for a blue light that seems to roll across its surface as you turn it. Moonstone lips borrow that light, and it is the look India Anaïs made its milky opal glaze and its milky opal lacquer to match.

What are Moonstone lips?

Moonstone lips are a lip look that puts a milky, opalescent sheen with a blue-violet cast over a bare or lightly balmed lip. The base is a milky jelly gloss, translucent white, with a fine interference pearl that turns blue-violet at the edges of the light. Applied thinly, it is a glow. Concentrated at the cupid's bow, it is a highlight.

The look is defined by what is thin about it. The pearl is fine, the pigment is low and the natural lip colour shows through the white. That is the difference between a moonstone and a frosted lipstick: the sheen is on the lip, and the lip is still visible under it.

Why is frost back, and why softer?

The return of frost is documented across the winter of 2025 to 2026. Cosmopolitan, reported by AOL, declared frosty lips officially back for the winter. Parade described the cold-girl look, flushed skin with stained or tinted lips and a return of icy pearl, in its cold girl makeup coverage. Who What Wear's spring 2026 list included frosty finishes led by L'Oréal's viral Ballerina Shoes at 10 dollars, according to Who What Wear.

The softness is in the sources too. Dutch summer 2026 coverage in Girlscene describes frosted lips with a subtle mother-of-pearl shine. On Pinterest, opalescent makeup is up 115 per cent and icy blue and frosted makeup up 150 per cent in Pinterest Predicts 2026. The word in every report is opalescent, not metallic.

The formula explains the rest. Stylus trend analyst Lisa Payne told Glossy that consumers return to old looks only if the formulas are ten to fifteen times what they were before. The 2002 frost was a dry lipstick. The 2026 frost is a jelly gloss with a treatment base and a pearl inside it.

Why moonstone, and not silver?

Moonstone is a gem whose light appears to billow across its surface, a phenomenon called adularescence, caused by light scattering between thin flat layers inside the stone, as described by the Gemological Institute of America. The misty light seems to roll across the surface as the viewing angle changes, and a blue sheen against a colourless background is the prized combination.

That is the effect the lip copies: a blue-white light on a near-colourless base that moves as the mouth moves. Silver is a flat metallic; moonstone is a light inside a milky stone. Gem names are already the vocabulary of nail polish, which is why a nail house uses them for lips as well.

How do you wear Moonstone lips in three steps?

You will need: a hydrating lip balm, a milky jelly gloss with a blue-violet interference pearl, a white-pearl highlighter or the same gloss for the cupid's bow, and a clean fingertip.

1. Prepare the lip. Press a thin coat of balm into the lips and blot once. A frost shows dryness, so the surface must be smooth before the pearl goes on.
2. Press on the moonstone. Dab a small amount of the milky pearl gloss on the centre of each lip and press it outward with a fingertip until it is a thin, even veil. The natural lip colour should show through the white.
3. Place the light. Tap a touch of white pearl, or a second small dose of the same gloss, on the peak of the cupid's bow and the centre of the lower lip. This is where the light rolls when the mouth moves.

Moonstone, the house milky opal glaze, was made for these three steps and for one thin coat. It is sold out; the next edition is planned for spring 2027. Any milky jelly gloss with a fine blue-violet pearl, applied thinly, gives the same effect.

What is the moonstone manicure?

The moonstone manicure is a milky white nail with a fine interference pearl inside the polish, so the nail has a soft satin glow with a blue-violet edge and no chrome mirror. Who What Wear's 2026 forecast named built-in pearl polish, pearl in the formula and no chrome powder on top, as a trend of the year in its 2026 nail trends. The New York spring 2027 runways confirmed it in September 2026 with pearlescent satin at Diane von Furstenberg, Sandy Liang and Anna Sui.

Two thin coats over a base coat, on a short oval nail, with a glass top coat. For a softer version, one coat of a sheer milky white and a fine pearl tip make a moonstone French. On the eye, a silver-white pencil in the lower waterline keeps the light cold.

How does the 2026 frost differ from the 2002 frost?

The frost of 2026 is a finish, not a colour. That is the whole change, and it is why it works on every lip tone: the pearl rests on top of the natural colour and leaves it visible.
